On 14th July 2020, Samsung released a white paper titled “The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All”, outlining their 6G plans.

The completion of the 6G standard and its earliest commercialisation date could be as early as 2028, with mass commercialisation occurring around 2030.

As cities get smarter, Cisco predicts that the number of connected devices will reach 500 billion by 2030. That’s 59 devices for every person expected to be alive in 2030. Most of these devices will be machines such as vehicles, home appliances, smart sensors, and factory equipment. As the number of connected machines grows exponentially, those machines will become dominant users of 6G communications.

The 6G development takes into account the possibility of embedding AI in various entities comprising wireless networks and services.

As they define the needs of 6G, they are considering AI needs and applications. This consideration will create more opportunities using AI for the improvement of overall network operation in terms of performance, cost, and ability to provide various services.

In a 6G environment, through digital twins, users will be able to explore and monitor the reality in a virtual world, without temporal or spatial constraints. Users will be able to observe changes or detect problems remotely through the representation offered by digital twins.

They will be even able to go beyond observation, and actually interact with the digital twins, using VR devices or holographic displays.

6G is still some way off as 5G is not yet commercialised globally. It will take 10 years to design and implement 6G connectivity.
